WHAT'S NEW FOR YOU ??..7/18/10 - 7/6.. Captain Al Zalata of Barnegat, N.J. sent us this report.."Greetings..On Monday I had the 'Fisher moose" and his pal Pat underway early to catch a tide change.. What I didn't realize, there was a major amount of holiday traffic which made things rough for us.. The heat and the vampire greenheads were not any help at all, but we still managed to boat some fish.. Underway at 0545 Wednesday with Rick Cox from www.philadelphiaflyfishing.com We started off with a couple of bass at the top of the flood tide and we were forced to work a lot of sheltered spots due to the mistakes of the weather service in forcasting the days wind speed and direction.. We had some hits on the fly but not many hook sets.. It's always a pleasure to have Rick on board casting.. The fluke bite is pretty good on the flood tide in a couple of spots, you have to work for the bigger fish and that includes a lot of throw back fish-- CATCHEMUP.. 4/10...East Central Florida..Captain Chris Myers sent us this 4th of July report...Excellent summer fishing continues along Florida's space coast.. Redfish have been consistent and some big tarpon have moved into the area.. This pattern should continue throughout the next few months.. Despite some erroneous reports to the contrary, there is no oil in our area and the fishing is great.. Last week, I had Japanese fly angler Hiro on board for three days.. We had excellent weather and each day brought shots at hundreds of redfish.. Early in the morning, Hiro got multiple bites from redfish on topwater slider flies.. Unfortunately, none connected with the hook.. This is quite common with redfish as they often create a wake when charging a surface fly that pushes the fly away as they attempt to grab it.. Ladyfish provided an exciting interlude between attempts at redfish.. On the third day, Hiro still had not hooked his target species.. As the day began, we found some schools of redfish crashing mullet against a sand bar.. Hiro hooked up but the fish shook loose.. We tried a different spot where he landed a redfish on a crab fly.. He spent the remainder of the day throwing multiple flies to schools of giant redfish.. He finally hooked one on a black crab but it came off after several minutes.. Large tarpon have made their way into the Lagoon system and can be found rolling through mid morning in 6-8 feet of water.. While there are some 10-20 pound fish mixed in, most of these fish are from 40-100 pounds and are too large to be landed in a reasonable time with redfish and trout fly rods.. To target these fish, you will need a heavy rod (10 or 12 wt) with 60-80 pound leader.. Anglers using Live baits will often be eaten by ladyfish or catfish before the tarpon get to them.. Casting a single hook fly like a sinking Deciever at rolling fish is the most effective tactic.. With water temperatures between 85 and 95 degrees, fish can often die of stress if fought for prolonged periods.. During the past few weeks, I have seen numerous large redfish and even tarpon floating dead.. It is important to use proper tackle and fighting techniques to make sure these trophy fish survive release.. Call Captain Chris today to get your shot at these big fish while they are in the lagoons.. 4/7/10.. CULEBRAS, PR... Captain Chris Goldmark..."Strong North East trades have set in for the first time this season.. Normally these are conditions we experience in January and February.. Strange year weather wise here at latitude 18.. Winds made it tough to pole and see fish even wading as we resumed fishing after the Bachanal.. Schedule is light so hopefully I'll get a few chances to fish on my own this week and next.. Picture on the HOME PAGE of the AFFS Site this week is Dave Toth with a big Bone Fish he released with me Good Thursday before the craziness.. His Wife Jill also caught a Big Bone that afternoon and pulled the hook on another after the first run.. Slamin' fishing with fantastic anglers"...4/6/10..Central PA...Fly Guide LANCE WILT, sends us this report from the SPRUCE CREEK FISHING COMPANY..April 6, 2010 ..."It feels more like June than early April at the moment and bug activity continues to keep picking up.. I have been on Big Fishing Creek and Penns as of late.. Lots of BWOs and Stones in the air.. A few fish responding on top but nothing to write home about.. Nymphing has been solid with small olive nymphs, large cranefly larva and caddis (grannom) imitations taking the majority of the fish.. Fish are starting to eat the bugs nymphed “actively” which makes me think they are starting to look up.. All of the streams are in good shape right now.. The weatherman is calling for some rain this week…should be good fishing conditions.. Be sure to bring a rain coat"... A.F.F.S member Eric Stroup will be speaking this coming Monday at 7 p.m. April 12th at a free public meeting of Penn's Woods West Trout Unlimited, VFW Post 810, 3801 Clairton Blvd. (Rte. 51), Brentwood, 412-963-2824.. Captain Chris Myers of CENTRAL FLORIDA SIGHT FISHING CHARTERS sent us this recent report from the Mosquito Lagoon arealocated just north of our Fish Camp in Palm Bay, Florida.. "It looks like the long cold winter may be coming to an end here in central Florida.. The water temperature on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon broke the 70 degree mark yesterday and the manatee are beginning to return.. Fishing for the past few weeks has been outstanding.. We have been seeing hundreds of tailing redfish on each trip.. Black drum have been plentiful as well.. The baitfish schools will soon return and with them will come the trout, ladyfish and jack crevalle.. April should be an excellent month if recent trips are any indication of what is to come.. With the fishing tailing aggressively, this is an excellent time for fly anglers to hook into a redfish.. Tailing fish are usually feeding on small crabs that are easily imitated with flies.. The number one challenge for my fly fishing clients this month was getting the fly to the fish before they became aware of our presence.. Once this happens they usually will not eat.. The ability to hit your target with one or two false casts will significantly increase your chance of getting a bite'.. Guide Paul Healy from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania reports.. Yesterday I went to the KEN LOCKWOOD GORGE in CALIFON NJ.. Califon is short for California!.. That is what they used to call this Town.. I think because of how beautiful it is!.. I heard from the guys that fish it regularly that the Fish are there.. And that they just stocked a bunch of Brook Trout.. So I fished a big white Saltwater Clouser about 4 Inchs long.. This thing belongs on a 4 oz Hopkins ITS HUGE FOR FRESHWATER!.. But they catch trout in the Spring so I fish them.. I used my 6wt Sage SP with a Rio 150 dc sink tip line leader down to 1x.. This I call my "Commercial Rod".. Water temp 49 degrees.. I started catching Brookies right away and caught 9 before the rain started to fall HEAVY!.. Then they started to go nuts for it!.. I caught 3 more in the heavy downpour but had to quit because of lightning, DAMM!.. I really wanted to stay, but to much risk of a strike hitting me.. I really think that this part of the South Branch of the Raritan River is the best, and should be fished by every one at least once".. 4/1..Capt Mike has this notice for any interested anglers heading to Florida.. Any fly fishermen that would like an inexpensive place to stay to fly fish this area this Spring with Redfish, Trout and Drum GALORE.. should contact me for availability of our Fish Camp house.. We have 2 bedrooms with 2 baths and an additional pullout sofa/bed in the Family Room available.. We charge fly fishermen $60 a night or $300 a week for the place, which includes linens, pots, pans etc.. With the use of the boat ramp and community pool.. Like the old T.V. commercial used to say.."COME ON DOWN"!!!!...
