THE LATEST WILD SIDE NEWS... 7/27/08... From Fly Guide Chip Jablonski of Allentown, PA....EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA... "Heavy rains that drenched the region earlier this week provided a much-needed shot of water for local rivers, streams and lakes, setting us up for a good weekend of angling... Tricos are hatching on trout streams across the region, fly fishermen at places such as the Little Lehigh, Saucon, Monocacy and Bushkill Creeks are enjoying excellent surface action during the morning spinner falls... Little Lehigh Creek is 3.02 feet at Allentown and flowing at 404 cubic feet per second, which is way above normal flow of 75 Cf's. Water is high and muddy due to Wednesday's heavey rains, and fishing conditions are difficult at best, as the water clears, you have an excellent opportunity to catch large trout that will move into shallow water to ambush minnows, try using large streamer patterns that move water... Once the water clears, surface action for trico hatch, which is still in full swing, should continue... Don't forget to use some of the more traditional patterns. Try using, San Juan Worms, Green Weenies, Muddler Minnows, and Terrestrials... I find that when the water is high and off color, the more finikey trout are now a little bit easier to catch... Try and remember which streams in your local area that clear, or begin to clear first... I would start with the one that is clearing and work my way to the other streams that are favored"... Tight lines, Chip 7/20/07... "Little Lehigh Creek is 2.25 feet at Allentown and flowing at 70 cubic feet per second, which is below normal flow of 85 cfs... The water is gin clear and 62 degrees with the trico hatch in full swing... If you can be on the water by 7:30 a.m., Midges and Craneflies are also hatching... Recomended fly patterns include Tricos, Al's Rats, Honeybugs, Griffith's Gnats, Bivisibles, San Juan Worms, Parachute Adams, Pheasant Tails, Henryville Specials, Honeybug Inchworms, Cressbugs, Scuds, Red and Black Ants. Toward evening try Parachute Adams, they are fun!.. PLEASE NOTE I BELIEVE THERE IS A WARM WEATHER ADVISORY FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS, PLEASE USE CAUTION!... Last weekend I had 2 young kids out for 2hrs. of "FUN" at the fly stretch on the Little Lehigh catch and release section... They had an exciting time and could not stop talking about how many fish they caught and released, (per their grandmother)... This weekend I have an open weekend and I think I'm gonna tye some flies and get ready for the upcomming New York salmon run, which starts soon,(NOW)... A friend contacted me Tuesday 7-15-08, to say he hooked up on a Coho and landed it... He said it was an average size fish... It is not the time to go racing up there because of 1 report of a fish, but if your going up for some recreation, take your fly rod, you never know"... Little Lehigh Creek is 2.27 feet at Allentown and flowing at 64 cubic feet per second, which is well below normal of 80 cfs. The water temperature 62 degrees, Trico hatch has started, but is still sporadic at best, expect tricos to become more intense and predictable in the coming weeks. July 5 is the typically start date for full-blown hatches. If you can be on the water by 7:30 a.m. Midges, craneflies and baetis also hatching, recommended patterns include tricos(polly wing), Al's rats, Honeybugs, Griffith's gnats, Bivisibles, San Juan worms, parachute Adams, pheasant tails, Henryville specials, Honeybug inchworms, Cressbugs, blue-winged olives, and various streamer patterns. And Don't forget Ants Large black and red... I find when fishing ants, I like to fish them under trees... In doing so I let them "plop" on the water as if they fell from the tree... I found the foam ants float better, and longer than fur ants, but I think the fur ants have better life like actions... Delaware River is around 3.8 feet at Belvidere gauge, water temperatures are in the 70s, and water has a slight stain from recent algae bloom... Fish are in a classic summer pattern, but fish aren't really feeding very aggressively... On cloudy days, smallmouth bass are coming up from the bottom to feed on bugs and shad fry suspended in the water column. During times of bright sunshine, the only place to catch fish is in fast water.... Salmon River New York, Will be going there the first of August, had a few reports of skamania steelhead in the river. I would not make plans to bolt up for this run. There may be nothing around by the time you get there... Its just one of those things, if you go you may get "lucky" and you may not... They are few and far between... Good luck and tight lines everyone! Chip "Little Lehigh Creek is 2.2 feet at Allentown and flowing at 71 cubic feet per second, which is below normal, water is 62 degrees, fishing isn't bad, it seems we are between hatches right now... We are getting sporadic reports of trico sightings, but many folks mistake Paraleptophlebia Mollis (up downers) for tricos... Paraleps are size 22 with a transparent, black tipped abdomen... Look for Tricos on the Little Lehigh around July... This weekend is the last stocking for the Little Lehigh, our club will be stocking fish on Saturday... I have 2 youths that are going out on Sunday morning, we will be fishing the stocked area... Salmon River Pulaski NY...With the up comming holiday weekend if you are in this area, you may want to take your steelhead rod to the river and go for a walk... You never know, one could pick up an Atlantic or a Skamania steelhead... They should be releasing water for the kyaykers... After the release is the best time...Happy 4th everyone!"... Stop by here weekly for the latest info... Our 07 Season had a great run of fish on our Lake Ontario tributary streams... We enjoyed several weeks of excellent fishing with the Browns, Salmon and Steelhead.. Thanks to all our clients that joined us up there and we hope to see you all back there this season... We will be attending several Sportsmen's Shows in 08 with both the A.F.F.S. and with WILD WATER FLY FISHING Products, our latest sponsor.. Stop by and see us at the booths and talk fishing with us... Captain Mike Corblies spent a couple of days filming us in November on 18 Mile Creek and has put together a 2 DVD video for us... Mike will also be producing my first fly tying video.. We will have them available for you to watch at this Winters Shows and to purchase them starting this July... my Dad Charlie and I look forward to seeing you on the streams this season...Good Luck in 08..
