Captain Mike's "Notes on the Fly" 2/11/10..I am writing this today from sunny Florida where I am staying for a few days with my good friend, fly fishing pioneer Jack Montague.. We have been performing at the FLORIDA SPORTSMEN'S SHOWS for their winter events and working on completing the interior of the NEW A.F.F.S. FLY SHOP / EXHIBIT ON WHEELS.. We are catchng some nice Tilapia on the fly up to 5 pounds from Jack's Ponds here at his WOLF~GLEN SCHOOL in Punta Gorda.. Even though the Florida fish kill has shut down the snook fishery and hurt fishing for some of the other species this winter you can still do pretty well with sea trout and large mouth bass if you are headed this way from up North.. 12/13/09... We closed out our 2009 Shows yesterday at a brand new Fishermen's Flea Market in Barnegat, N.J... Capt. Al Zlata and I spent the day talking to some old and new friends about the fishing this year and lining up some trips and lessons for 2010.. It was great to see a nice group of High School students interested enough in fishing form a School Club and put on their own Sportsmen's Show for the public.. Shows me that ours is a sport with a heritage that will some how or other still continue.. No matter what some other "interest groups" or their cowardly political allies might have in mind for us.. Sportsmen and Women will continue on.. We have some good things planned for the coming New Year with our new trailer / fly shop on wheels.. It ought to be a lot of fun to work out of and it also will be an easy way for me to have another Shop at the Jersey Shore.. I really miss all the guys showing up on the weekends to tie flys and swap lies like we used to at our Brick Town Shop.. Now you all can stop by my house in Island Heights(when ever I'm not in Florida or some place else on the road and buy and try out fly fishing gear plus "tie and lie" with some of the craziest and most interesting guys in the sport.. Just look over my calendar to see when the Shop will be at the house in Jersey or give me a call to make sure I didn't put the Gone Fishing Sign on the door again.. But Not to worry !!!.. If you have an idea of what you need, my son Matt or daughter Annie should be able to help you out if I'm not around.. Also it looks like I'll be opening up my new "FISH CAMP" in Palm Bay, Florida in February.. My flats boat is waiting down there and ready to "go to work" on the Indian River Lagoon.. Call me if you want to "Come on Down" during March or April for a day or two of fishing with me and/or Captain Chris Myers.. I'm also setting up another little fly shop/tying room at our Florida location if you need rods, reels, lines and tying materials or just want to stop by and swap some fish stories.. I have a great spot there for casting lessons right next to our boat ramp... Looks like 2010 could be our best year ever...Capt.Mike

   CLASSES ARE HELD WHEN THERE ARE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN ATTENDING AND IF WE ARE NOT SCHEDULED FOR TRIPS TO OTHER AREAS, GROUP SEMINARS OR SHOWS.  WE THEN DECIDE WETHER IT WILL BE A FRESH OR SALTWATER CLASS DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF REQUESTS WE RECIEVE PRIOR TO THE CLASS DATE....

GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

All of our Salt Water classes BEGINNER or INTERMEDIATE level are held from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.at I.B.S.P. or other on the water locations, including Beaches, Rivers, Bays or the Ocean, depending on the size of the class and it's particular interests...Boats, Kayaks, 4WD. Vehicles are provided as needed for the class location....

My Personal Fresh Water classes are for BEGINNERS and are held from 8:00 a.m - 12:00 at local Rivers, Streams, Ponds and Lakes... Boats, Kayaks, 4WD. Vehicles are provided as needed for the class location....  Our North Jersey trout classes are held on the best streams in New Jersey and are conducted by experts Mike McCauliffe and John Collins and their associates... They offer instruction for both novices to near experts and you should contact them directly for particulars on their classes and the fees they charge for their various services... Class size is normally 1 to 5 students per instructor except for special groups such as Scouts, Sportsmen's Clubs, Seminars etc.

Our classes include professional videography and photography at no additional charge....

All fly rods, reels and necessary equipment is provided for you with the exception of waders...

If you have some fly gear of your own that you plan to be using, you should bring it along for evaluation during your class....

You will need to purchase your N.J. Freshwater Fishing License & Trout Stamp prior to attending any Freshwater Classes.... N.J. Licenses are available at most Wal-Mart, K-Marts, Dicks and many other Fishing & Hunting Stores....Visit the N.J. Division of Fish & Game website for complete information on regulations and fees...

Private lessons are also available.... Our fee is $50 per hour per student...Minimum of 2 hours...Refresher lessons for students that have already completed one or more of our regular classes....$25 per hour

SALTWATER BEGINNERS COURSE

Emphasis is on basic casting, knots, lines, leaders, equipment selection and lots of information on salt water flyrodding techniques.  A day with us will provide you all the basic skills needed to start catching fish with the fly rod...Our students for the last 10 years have told us consistently that we do not charge enough money for the knowledge and experience we provide them....Many have made that statement to us after having attended some of the "BIG" name Schools and have then come to us for "further instruction"....   We have been involved in the sport of saltwater flyrodding for almost 50 years.... 

SALTWATER INTERMEDIATE CASTERS CLINIC

The focus is on distance casting and the use of shooting head systems for salt water flyrodding and big freshwater situations....Student casting problems are video taped and worked on with your instructors advice...Custom shooting head systems (fly lines)are discussed and tailored to the individual students requirements....

FRESHWATER BEGINNERS CLASSES

We offer two different freshwater Classes.  One for trout and salmon fishing in Rivers and streams and the other for fly fishing in Ponds and Lakes for "Warm Water" fish. Each class is a half day (4 hour program) that will introduce you to the fundamentals of fly fishing and the various flies used to capture gamefish. Hands on knot tying and tackle selection are explained in detail. The first half of the class is devoted to individual instruction in the basics of freshwater fly casting.  The second half of the class will be spent on the water learning the various techniques used for catching either trout or "warmwater species" ie: bass, bluegills, crappie, pickerel, pike etc.
